Anupama Bhagwat belongs to the rare category of female indian classical
instrumentalists. She is a leading representative of the famed Imdadkhani Gharana,
having imbibed the vigor that is the hallmark of the style: scintillating fast taans,
mastery of the meditative alaap and brilliant fluency of melody (raag bhava), all the
while maintaining her technical virtuosity. The 34-year old Anupama has trained for 21
years under the Imdadkhani doyen, Pt. Bimalendu Mukherjee. Besides having performed in
prestigious venues all over the world, she is the recipient of several awards, among
them: Surmani, by Sur Sringar Sansad,the First Position in the All India Radio Music
Competition (1994), a HRD Scholarship from the Government of India and several grants
from the Ohio Arts Council. She is also a regular radio and TV artist.
